It happened quickly and the sofa is soiled with stains. If you want to clean and care for your upholstered furniture, you should follow a few tips. Otherwise cleaning proves to be difficult.
If you want to clean your upholstered furniture, you should work very carefully. The visible stains, which often penetrate deep into the fabric, are otherwise made worse. The wrong cleaning agents and vigorous rubbing, for example, are counterproductive. After all, it’s annoying enough when red wine or coffee soils the upholstery.
Cleaning upholstered furniture: fight against cola and the rest
If you notice minor soiling such as cola stains, dab them immediately but carefully with a clean cloth. Then take a damp cloth and clean the soiled areas of the sofa with a shot of a grease-dissolving cleaning agent – from the outside to the middle.
If you have to clean your upholstered furniture because eggs, urine or blood have soiled it, for example, it is best to use cold water. Again, do not scrub vigorously. You can avoid so-called dry edges if you then wipe seam by seam with a very slightly damp cloth. On the other hand, a professional cleaning company must be hired for heavy sweat stains and soiling from acidic liquids.
Take proper care of the sofa
Ideally, you should also clean your upholstered furniture if there have been no dirty accidents beforehand – this will keep it nice and comfortable for a long time: Take care of your upholstered furniture every day. Use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of the coarsest dirt, such as dust and fluff. Your device should work with reduced power. Otherwise unsightly stripes will appear. Experts also advise pulling a stocking or a soft brush over the nozzle. Don’t forget the cracks and – if possible – also lift the upholstery.
By the way: The first care step is already at the point of purchase. Ideally, buy a sofa with an easy-care cover. This way, you won’t have to worry about complicated cleaning later on. Ideally, the covers can even be removed and dismantled into individual parts using several zips. You can also clean the covers in your own washing machine.
